At the recent preseason football Media Day hosted at Fountain Inn High School, GreerNews.com had the opportunity to catch up with several Greer-area football teams ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Greer High football was the third team we had a chance to chat with about the upcoming campaign.

Yellow Jackets WR coach Matthew Huff brought three of this upcoming season’s leaders to the June 26 media event: OL Nathan Huff, DL Anius Smith, and RB Calvin McCoy.

After a 2025-26 season where Greer finished third in a competitive region and suffered a lopsided first-round playoff loss at Camden, the Jackets are looking to rewrite the script and make bigger noise this year.

“It’s been a lot different of a preseason than we saw last year,” said Matthew. “And I think it comes from just the senior leadership that we have. We don’t have a ton of seniors, but all the ones that we do have are active and lead their group well.”

Greer’s seniors are a bit fewer and farther between this season, except at one spot: the offensive line. That group will be riddled with seniors and led by one of the Upstate’s top offensive linemen in Nathan Huff. Huff has picked up two college offers since his junior campaign.

“We have a young team across the board in a sense this year, but we’re very motivated,” said Nathan. “We have a lot of chemistry and are starting to wake up as a team.”

Nathan will anchor an offensive line keyed in on establishing a patented, strong Greer rushing attack — headlined by 2025 breakout star Calvin McCoy. McCoy rushed for 1,339 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior.

“Honestly, I’m out there now,” said McCoy. “People know me. Now that I’ve made a bit of a name, I’m excited to get out and follow it up this season.”

Both McCoy and Smith —  who projects to be one of Greer’s stars on the defensive line — believe there’s something different in the air this preseason for the Jackets.

“The work ethic this year in the weight room, in the classroom, even in 7-on-7s and on the practice field, it just feels different,” said McCoy.

“I’ve seen a lot of passion from our players,” said Smith. “The hustle has been there. Everybody’s showing up each day and putting in the work this summer. It shows we want it. We’ve got something to prove.”
