Damiah Polk is a senior volleyball star and captain for Greer. Polk led the Lady Jackets in total kills last season.
After winning a national championship with her club volleyball team this summer, Polk is poised to help make 2025 Greer’s best season in recent memory.
GreerNews.com caught up with Polk at the team’s media day on Friday to talk about the upcoming year and some of Polk’s future aspirations.
Greer News (GN): Damiah, you’re one of just two seniors on this year’s Greer roster. How are you hoping to set an example to lead some of the younger players on the team in your final season?
Damiah Polk (DP): For me, having a close relationship with them is important. That is something I wanted when I was a younger player. If I can implement the right personality and style of play into the girls, and if I can help build them up, they’ll move into the leadership part of the program when I’m gone.
GN: What is it going to take for this year’s team to reach new heights?
DP: We all just have to buy in. We’ve been talking as a team about buying into the program, buying into the coaches, buying into each other and what this program has to offer. We need to have the mentality of ‘Why not us?’ Every year, we kind of just come into it with the mindset of wanting to be better. Why not us to have the best season? Why not us to win the region? That’s the mentality we need.
GN: You’ve mentioned that volleyball has been your sole sport for a while. You’ve put everything into it. When did you first find a love for volleyball?
DP: My mom played volleyball at Furman. She loves it. She coached me and my sister at the YMCA when we were young. I ended up training at Upward after a while. When I was 13, I made the best team for that age group at Upward, and I think that’s when I realized just how seriously I wanted to take volleyball.
GN: What is your favorite game or moment from your career at Greer so far?
DP: Last year, we played Travelers Rest, and we lost in five sets. It was a really close game. I look back and remember that being my game. Everything seemed to be going in my favor. I had a ton of kills. That’s definitely my favorite game.
GN: What kind of legacy do you want to leave for Greer volleyball and Greer High in general?
DP: I want the girls to remember me by my confidence. I want them to have that same confidence. It’s a matter of no one being able to tell me I’m not good enough to be here. That’s what I want them to remember. When they look back at me, I want them to think of confidence and hopefully the fact that I left it all out there. I played with no regrets.
GN: Aside from volleyball, what are some of your other passions?
DP: I want to go to college and study nursing, so that’s a big one. I also love spending time with my family. I love traveling. I like hanging out with friends. My sister and I are very active, so we like going to the gym, walking, going hiking, things like that.
GN: If you get the AUX cord to hype the team up with music before a game what are you playing?
DP: I actually have a pregame playlist for that. I love the song “Swag Surf,” but if I had to pick a specific artist, it would be Drake.
GN: Dream vacation spot?
DP: Hawaii, for sure. I’ve always wanted to go there.
GN: Best restaurant for a post-game meal?
DP: Chick-fil-a, always. No question.
GN: What are you going to miss the most about your time at Greer?
DP: The people that I’ve met. All the connections that I’ve made. The hardest thing is going to be leaving these girls. I know that if I’m having a hard time, I can lean on them. They can lean on me, too. Those are friendships I hope I’ll have for a lifetime.
