A new bookstore has opened its doors in downtown Greer.
The Bookmark, located at 115 School St., opened in October, with a collection spanning multiple genres and plenty of book-themed merchandise. The shop is run by husband-and-wife duo Avery and Nicole Noel, who wanted to bring a community-focused bookstore to downtown.
“Almost every single day, someone comes in and says, ‘This is what Greer was missing,’” Nicole said. “And it’s really rewarding to hear that people were really looking for this type of space.”
Nicole and Avery met while attending Coastal Carolina University and moved to the Upstate in 2018. Both avid readers growing up, the pair got back into the hobby after their first daughter was born.
The Bookmark has an extensive collection of book titles, and customers are also able to request specific titles to be added. Avery and Nicole say they wanted the store to serve as a community space, with event programming, cozy seating and plenty of great books to get lost in.
“Seeing people get excited about the books is incredibly rewarding — especially kids,” Avery said. “Because there is a literacy crisis, not only in South Carolina but nationwide, and this is one way we can push back against that while making it fun.”
