Spartanburg Community College recently cut the ribbon on its newest program, a one-year cosmetology pathway at its Tyger River Campus.
The newly renovated space on the campus features instructional labs and a modern salon-style floor designed to mirror a professional environment for students. Allison Brewer, the department chair, notes that college staff have dedicated years toward launching this new program, which now has 36 enrolled students.
“Our new Cosmetology School gives students an elevated, real-world space to learn, practice, and grow,” Brewer said. “From the design of the clinic to the technology in our classrooms, everything has been built to support student success and industry-ready training. The openings in our program support the growing demand for skilled beauty professionals across the region. Our students graduate ready to meet industry standards, serve clients with excellence, and build meaningful careers.”
The cosmetology program is designed to be completed in one year for daytime students and two years for evening students. It offers comprehensive training in hair design, skin care and nail technology, allowing students to work with a variety of professional-grade products and equipment. In addition, students get to work directly with clients in the college’s on-campus clinic and earn industry-recognized credentials.
The program has partnered with Salon Centric, a Florida-based company owned by L’Oréal, for its salon-grade products. Brewer also notes that all students get to work with real human hair on their mannequins, giving them the most accurate practice.
Michael Mikota, President of Spartanburg Community College, spoke at the ribbon cutting, highlighting the college’s efforts to bring the cosmetology program to fruition. Moving forward, the program hopes to enroll 20 new students each semester.
“Our new cosmetology program, housed in the revitalized Tyger River Campus, reflects how we continue to empower students with in-demand skills, state-of-the-art learning spaces, and the confidence to turn passion into profession,” Mikota said. “This is access, workforce readiness and community investment brought to life.”
