The Spartanburg District Five Schools Board of Trustees had its first regular meeting of the 2026-27 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 24.
At Tuesday night’s meeting, trustees heard a back-to-school update and voted on two agenda items. As the 2026-27 school year begins, district officials say they were staffed at nearly 100% and are continuing to pursue various projects.
“District Five continues to be a place where people are excited to be — we had no vacancies in any classrooms that needed teachers, and we just finished phase three of construction at Byrnes High School,” said Spartanburg District Five Superintendent Randall Gary. “We got a great start across the district, and we’re really excited about this upcoming year and what’s in store for us.”
The first agenda item up for the board’s consideration was an update to the district’s policy on non-resident students. This update established a more comprehensive process for admitting non-resident students into the district, in accordance with South Carolina law. The board voted unanimously to approve the item.
The second item before the board was the consideration of a $5,671,838 guaranteed maximum price for concrete and early structural work at Sharon Grove Middle School. Sharon Grove Middle is an upcoming project under the $200 million bond referendum that passed in November, aimed at alleviating overcrowding concerns in the district. The board voted unanimously to approve the item.
