Martha James Corbin, age 87, of Greer, peacefully entered the gates of Heaven on August 26, 2026.
Born on Jan. 7, 1939, in Greer, South Carolina, Martha was the daughter of the late Kate James. She was truly one of a kind—a hard worker, a loyal friend, a devoted mother and grandmother, a caring sister, and, to more people than could ever be counted, simply “Granny.”
Martha lived her life with a strong work ethic, a generous heart, and a genuine love for people. She believed in working hard, staying busy, helping others whenever she could, and finding joy along the way. She took great pride in continuing to work well into her 80s, something that reflected the strength and determination that defined her throughout her life.
Martha began her working years at Greer Mill and later spent 30 memorable years serving the community through Martha’s Kitchen at Greer Country Club. For Martha, it was about much more than preparing meals. She loved the people she met, the friendships she formed and the opportunity to care for others in the way she knew best. Over the years, countless people came to know and love Martha, and many became more like family than customers or friends.
When she wasn't working or caring for others, Martha loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time in the Great Smoky Mountains. Those trips brought her great happiness and created many treasured memories.
Martha was a member of Washington Baptist Church, and her faith was an important part of the way she lived her life. She showed kindness in ways both big and small and had a special gift for making people feel welcome, cared for, and loved. She was the kind of woman who would go out of her way to help someone—and, if you knew Martha, you know she might fuss at you a little while she was doing it. That was simply part of loving her and being loved by her.
Martha is survived by her son, Billy Campbell (Denise) of Greer; granddaughter, Ashley Conner (Chris) of Greer; great-grandchildren, Levi and Lela; bonus granddaughter, Kristen Logan (Derrick) of Powdersville; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Sullivan; sister, Jackie Raines (Ted) of Campobello; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and the many, many friends whose lives were made better simply by knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kate James; her sister, Ruby “Claudette” Campbell; and her three brothers, Robert Lee “RL” James, David James, and Ronnie James.
Martha leaves behind far more than memories. She leaves behind stories that will be told for years to come, laughter that will still be heard when family and friends gather, friendships that lasted a lifetime, lessons learned by watching the way she lived, and countless people who carry a special piece of her with them.
She will be dearly missed, but those who knew Martha can almost hear her reminding everyone not to make too much of a fuss. There is comfort in knowing that after a life spent working hard, loving deeply, caring for others, and giving so much of herself, Martha is now at rest and better than ever in the arms of Jesus.
Her life was a blessing, her presence was a gift, and being called her family or her friend was something to treasure.
A celebration of Martha’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 31 at Washington Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Trent Henson and Dr. Drew Hines. Burial will follow at Wood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1:45 p.m. Aug. 31 at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial donations be made to Greer Community Ministries, 738 S Line Street Ext, Greer, SC 29651, in Martha’s honor.
