Richard Douglas Freeland
Doug Freeland, 84, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026.
Born on Feb. 28, 1942, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Doug lived a life defined by love for his family and community. He was a longtime resident of Lyman, South Carolina, where he made a lasting impact through both his career and personal relationships.
Doug retired from the Greer Commission of Public Works after 41 years of faithful service. Throughout his career, he was known for his commitment, integrity, and willingness to serve others. His work helped support and strengthen the community he proudly called home.
Doug was known for his friendly nature and his favorite saying: “My Momma always told me to try and make a new friend every day. And today, you are my new friend.” He truly lived those words, making friends wherever he went and touching many lives with his kindness and warmth.
He enjoyed many years on the golf course and at the bowling alley, pursuing the hobbies he loved and creating lasting memories with those around him. All who knew him will deeply miss his warm smile, sense of humor, and kind-hearted nature.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Catherine Freeland, and his brother, Harold ‘Leroy’ Freeland. He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda W. Freeland; his son, Richard ‘Richie’ Douglas Freeland II; and his daughter, Amy Freeland Tucker. He was a proud Papa to Aaron Eubanks, Karsen Freeland, Madison Tucker, and Morgan Tucker. He was also blessed to be a great-grandfather to Zia Eubanks, Lilly Ann Eubanks, Owen Eubanks, and Chance Freeland.
Doug's greatest joy was his family, and his legacy lives on through the generations he loved so dearly. Though he is gone from our sight, Doug's memory will remain forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. on the day of service.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at Fairview Baptist Church, 1300 Locust Hill Rd, Greer, SC 29651.
In lieu of flowers, Doug requested that memorial contributions be made in honor of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease, which touched his family in a profound way.
