Greer High School’s Class of 2026 officially graduated early Friday morning at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Greer High School Bands program is hosting its second-annual Jacket Jam on April 18, featuring food trucks, local vendors, a car show and student talent. The event is a fundraiser for the band program, but will also feature other student groups, including the Future Farmers of America club and the school theater program. The event is open to the community and will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greer High School.
The first GreerNews.com Sports Awards will be held on May 14th at Turner Chapel, North Greenville University. The event will recognize high school athletes and teams from six schools in the area, with over 30 awards to be presented. Three nominees for each award will be invited to the event, which will be an ESPYs-style red carpet event. The awards include Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year, and Best Performance of the Year, among others.
Greenville County Schools has announced the ten finalists for the 2026-27 Teacher of the Year award. The finalists were chosen from approximately 6,000 teachers across the district and will be narrowed down to three finalists and the Teacher of the Year through in-person interviews and classroom observations. The finalists represent a range of subjects and schools across the district. The Teacher of the Year will be announced on Aug. 6.
The 28th annual Miss Greer High School pageant was held on January 23, with contestants competing in personal interview, fitness, talent, and evening gown categories. Kamryn Mathis, a sophomore at Greer High School, was crowned Miss GHS 2026 and won the photogenic, fitness, and evening gown awards. Ellie Mason was first runner-up, Laynie Smith was second runner-up, Emily Barbare was third runner-up, and Milanyia Petties was fourth runner-up. The outgoing Miss GHS, LilyKate Barbare, is also the reigning Miss SC Teen.
The first case of measles in Greenville County Schools has been confirmed at Crestview Elementary School, with one bus route from Greer Middle School and Greer High School also exposed. Anyone who went to Crestview Elementary on Jan. 6 may have been exposed. The exposure is part of a larger measles outbreak in the Upstate that began last October, now with the total number of cases exceeding 400. Parents and staff at all three schools were notified of the potential exposure, and anyone required to quarantine was contacted individually.
Schools in Greer have performed at or above the state level in all subject areas, according to school officials. Elementary schools are demonstrating year-over-year growth, middle schools are making impressive gains in literacy, and high schools are excelling in English while strengthening math. Blue Ridge High School was the district's top-performing high school for the 2024-2025 school year, with 97.9% of students passing the English II End-of-Course Exam. Riverside High School has the highest percentage of students earning a WIN Career Readiness Credential, with 90.7% of students credentialed.
The Greer Police Department responded to a suspicious person call near Gap Creek Road and Country Club Road. Officers responded at approximately 2 p.m. and did not find someone with a matching description. At this time, the Police Department says there is no known threat to the public.
Greenville County Schools and Spartanburg Districts 1-7 began their new school year on Aug. 11, with many schools experiencing increased enrollment and construction projects. Principals from various schools in the area expressed their excitement for the new year and their goals for academic growth and creating a positive learning environment for their students.
