The Spartanburg District Five Schools Board of Trustees approved a $6.88 million total cost for the South Transportation Hub project during its latest meeting. The facility, planned along Reidville Road, will include office space, training areas and maintenance bays. Board members also unanimously approved the district’s annual strategic plan update and received an update on naming two new schools tied to a $200 million bond referendum aimed at easing overcrowding.
Spartanburg District Five has appointed Robert Dunkin as the new Assistant Principal of Beech Springs Middle School and Nick Pegram as the new Assistant Principal of Florence Chapel Middle School. Dunkin has over a decade of experience in education, while Pegram has served as a Special Education teacher and department head at Florence Chapel for over a decade. Both will officially begin their new roles on July 1.
Dr. Ashley Williams, the current Principal of Beech Springs Middle School, has been appointed as the new Coordinator of Mentoring and Induction for Spartanburg District Five. In her new role, Williams will support new teachers through coaching, professional learning, and programs designed to strengthen teacher success and retention. She has a deep personal connection to the district, having attended Byrnes High School and having her own daughter as a student in the district. Williams will officially begin her new role on July 1.
Spartanburg District Five Schools has announced the four finalists for the 2026-2027 District Teacher of the Year award. The finalists are Candace Griffey, Lea Elizabeth Harrison, Jared Hembree and Tonya Williams, who were selected from a group of teachers chosen by each school across the district. The finalists will participate in interviews and classroom observations before the District Five Teacher of the Year is announced later this month.
Students at Wellford Academy of Science and Technology in Spartanburg District Five will soon be able to explore engineering and design through a unique hands-on experience. The initiative, called Telepresence Amusement Park, enables students to design and build small amusement park rides using K'NEX construction systems and to share their creations via livestream video. The project aims to foster curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving skills, while giving students an early introduction to STEAM pathways. The project is part of the Community STEAM Collaborative's mission to build connections between schools and communities while providing innovative, accessible learning experiences.

Due to Winter Storm Gianna, several city and county offices, as well as schools in Greer, will be closed or on a delayed schedule. All Greenville County offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday, Feb. 2, while all Spartanburg County offices will be closed. Greenville County Schools and Spartanburg District Five Schools will operate on an e-learning schedule for Monday.
Brian Thompson, the assistant principal at Beech Springs Middle School in Duncan, has been charged with failure to report child abuse/neglect. According to reports, Thompson was informed of an incident involving two juveniles in October and neglected to report it to police. He turned himself in on Monday, Dec. 8, and was released the following day on bond. He is set to return to court in early 2026. The incident is currently being investigated by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary of Spartanburg District Five Schools has been named "Citizen of the Year" by the Middle Tyger Area Council for his outstanding leadership, service, and commitment to the community. Under his leadership, the district has seen growth in student enrollment and academic achievement, including a rise in graduation rates and test scores. The Council also noted the passage of two bond referendums and the construction of several schools.
